Impacts of COVID-19 on Canadians – Living with Long-Term Conditions and Disabilities

Statistics Canada has released the results of a survey that it conducted in 2020 to assess the impact of the COVID19 pandemic on people who have a long-term condition or disability. The survey reinforces many anecdotal stories and articles in the media that point to the unique challenges and disproportionate impact of the pandemic on persons with disabilities. Highlights from the survey results:

  • 48% of respondents reported that their general health has deteriorated since the pandemic began.
  • 57% reported their mental health is worse since the pandemic began
  • Over 50% of people have difficulty meeting their essential needs and financial obligations
  • Among those whose household income has been affected by COVID19, 54% reported difficulty meeting their food/grocery needs and 38% have difficulty meeting their PPE (personal protective equipment) needs
