Sports & Recreation - Easter Seals Canada

Sports & Recreation

Everyone knows that regular physical activity or involvement in sport and recreation is good for the body, mind and soul.  Living an active life provides countless physical, psychological and social benefits that lead to better overall health, well-being and happiness. For Canadians living with disabilities, it’s no different. In fact, it might be even more important. Along with the obvious physiological benefits that come from regular exercise or physical activity, participation in sport or recreation can also provide heightened self-confidence, improved self-esteem and a greater sense of independence.

While the benefits of an active life are widely acknowledged, people living with disabilities often face a variety of barriers when it comes to participating in sport, recreation or physical activity. Whether it’s a lack of access, availability and opportunity; the result of misconceptions, stereotypes and stigma; or a matter of financial means, these obstacles can sometimes be difficult or even impossible to overcome.

That’s why Easter Seals challenges and encourages Canadians living with disabilities to get active and get involved. Easter Seals delivers a wide variety of specialized, fully-accessible sport, recreation and active living programs, like wheelchair basketball, for kids and adults with a range of physical, cognitive and sensory disabilities. Programs are both instruction and participation-based and are designed for all skill levels—from first-timers to those looking for a competitive outlet.
