About the Position
Easter Seals Canada is looking for enthusiastic and resourceful individuals to volunteer with Easter Seals as Volunteer Mentors for high school students living with disabilities. Approximately 25 to 50 volunteers from the following provinces are needed: Alberta, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Saskatchewan.
Each Volunteer Mentor will be paired with a high school student, and are expected to meet with the student, primarily online, for one hour at least once a month. The primary role of the Volunteer Mentor is to provide encouragement, guidance, motivation and support to students in their studies/academic career, and assist them in preparing for post-secondary studies (as well as summer jobs, or to transition to the labour force after graduating high school if they so choose). The overall aim of the mentorship program is to promote educational success, graduation and successful transition to post-secondary education or the workplace among students with disabilities currently in high school.
Candidates interested in the Volunteer Mentor position will have to participate in an interview. Shortlisted candidates will have to undergo a police check, and participate in an orientation/training session prior to being paired with a student mentee.
Desired Skills and Characteristics
The ideal candidate will have a genuine interest in volunteering and in supporting persons living with a disability. Essential Skills include:
- Trustworthy, Reliable, proactive, creative/resourceful, collaborative, adaptable, patient and diplomatic.
- Can carry out volunteer duties with limited supervision
- Able to communicate online, via email, Zoom/Teams, and computer/internet literate
- Ideally, have attended and graduated from a post-secondary institution (trade school, college, university) in Canada
- Have at least two to three years work experience
