Easter Seals Canada would like to extend a huge thank you to all those who participated in this year’s Help Feed Ability campaign at Safeway stores from June 12 -28, 2015 in support of our Easter Seals kids.
As a result of the incredible effort from Easter Seals’ volunteers and Safeway staff and the generosity of Safeway customers, we’re thrilled to report that an incredible $272, 281 has been raised for Easter Seals.
Whether you volunteered your time, donated at checkout, tweeted or encouraged customers to donate in store – know you’ve made a difference in the lives of Easter Seals campers who will now move through life with the independence, new friendships, and unique experiences that can only be realized through the magic of summer camp.
“I would rather go to Camp Horizon than to Disneyland,” wrote camp alumna Lindsay Firlotte, who has been to Disney’s theme park twice. “At camp, people see me and not my disability.”
We are especially grateful for our longstanding partnership with Safeway Canada and the support we have received over the years to support Easter Seals camp programs. As a result of this partnership, thousands of kids have had the opportunity to go to summer camp. This year funds will also support a brand new camp initiative called the Feeding Ability program. The program is designed to get children excited about eating and preparing healthy food regardless of their ability.
Each camper will receive a Carabiner Cookbook that contains important nutritional information and a number of great healthy recipes for at camp and at home. Camps will host a variety of Cook-out Cook-off experiences, where groups of campers will work together to create nutritious menus, prepare them and share their creations with a celebrity panel. It is our hope that this will be a memorable and engaging experience for campers – and one that instills the awareness and commitment to making better nutritional choices moving forward. Once campers return home, they can go to http://www.feedingability.ca where they will find a wealth of content supporting our ongoing commitment to eating better, and making mealtimes a rich experience – both in the preparation and actual sitting down to share together.
Summer camp for kids living with disabilities is a life-changing experience. At Easter Seals camps they are challenged in ways they never have before, in a loving and supportive environment. They have access to many activities they would otherwise rarely participate in. Friendships that are formed and cultivated at camp last a lifetime.
Hunter Berg of Swift Current, Saskatchewan would know – in addition to participating in his favourite camp activities he is most excited about the chance to “meet up with [his] friends” he told the Southwest Booster during the Help Feed Ability campaign.
The introduction of the new Feeding Ability program enhances an already remarkable experience – and provides life-long learning that will certainly impact their world in a most positive way.
“You know, [Tony] has a lot of fun there,” said Camp Horizon camper Tony’s mom, Wendy. “He experiences things that we can’t do [at home].”
Throughout the campaign, Safeway customers were invited to make a donation at checkout. Each $2 donation was rewarded with five bonus Air Miles reward miles and each $3 donation was rewarded with ten bonus Air Miles reward miles. During the campaign Easter Seals staff, volunteers and ambassadors greeted customers at select stores in Western Canada and Northern Ontario for BBQs, cake, raffles and more!
Last year Safeway raised $534,046 to send Easter Seals kids to camp through the See Ability in Disability Campaign. Since 2006 over $8 million has been raised for Easter Seals Canada through the efforts of Safeway staff and the generous donations from Safeway customers. Caring about the community is a Safeway tradition that began with the opening of its first Canadian stores in 1929. Safeway and its 30,000 Canadian employees share a passion for supporting the people and communities that it shares.
Thank you Safeway Canada and customers, for providing Easter Seals campers with the knowledge and incentive to be excited about eating and preparing healthy food regardless of their ability!
